Charred Towel
This morning I had a bunch of errands to run, and when one fell through, I had time to make lunch. Macaroni and cheese sounded like a good idea (Remember that I am a college student... I eat that kind of stuff). So I put the water filled pot on the stove and went to go get the butter from the fridge. After a moment, I glanced over at the stove to see the burner smoking like crazy! Literally, billowing off the stove. I rushed over to realize that I had turned on the wrong burner... A coil that had a dishtowel sitting on top of it, coincidentally. I am not sure why there was a towel on it, but because the towel was on fire, it was not the moment to figure that out. I quickly poured baking soda on it, and within a few seconds, the fire went out... Needless to say, it was a cooking adventure to remember. And I didn't burn down the apartment building.

Wow, sounds pretty exciting! I'm glad you didn't burn down your apartment. I think you only need to use baking soda when it's a grease fire, but I guess it's a good habit to get into in the kitchen.
ReplyDeleteWell you shouldn't pour water on the burner (that could start an electrical fire) so we figured baking soda was the best course of action.
ReplyDeleteEek! Glad you're okay!
ReplyDeleteOnce when I was making pancakes I put the batter (which was in tupperware) on a burner while I turned on the burner with the pan. The problem was, I accidently turned on the burner with the batter. It melted the tupperware and spilt pancake batter all over the stove. Nothing smells worse than melted platic.
ReplyDeleteMy roommate made an oil fire in our kitchen when I was going to Ricks and the fire deparment and ambulance both came. She just burned her hand so it wasn't too bad. It was a house and I was downstairs in my room when she shouted "fire". I didn't believe her at first because she was a little bit of a tease sometimes.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know you had a blog!! Where have I been? - I saw your name link on Janssen's last post and found myself here! Geez.
ReplyDeleteBTW, I have some nice burn rings on the back of one of my good cookbooks from doing the same thing.
